Orienteering - Sun 25 Feb

Post by jennyhaworth »

An opportunity to try orienteering and participate in a local event.
This event is just outside Thirsk (N Yorks) on Sun 25 Feb, next to the White Horse.

For anyone who doesn't know, orienteering involves running or walking around a series of checkpoints in a hillside/woodland area using a special detailed map. Its great fun, a challenge, and also useful for hillwalkers in developing detailed navigational skills. Its suitable for all abilities and ages (from a 'string' course for toddlers to the over 70s).

The plan is to meet up in the event car park at 10am, where I will be on hand to give help with choosing courses, registering for the event, and reading the maps (which are a bit different from ordnance survey ones). It will then take 1 to 1.5 hours to go around a course (this is usually individually but can also be in pairs), after which the plan is to adjourn to a local pub for some lunch/drinks.

You need to bring a compass, an A4 sized clear plastic bag or map case (for the map) and be prepared to get a bit muddy. Clothing is normal outdoor stuff - running shoes or walking boots with good grips, warm layers and waterproofs in case of rain. A snack / drink are also useful for before/after.

Hope to see you there.

directions - GR 497805; will be signed from the A170 east of Thirsk

Hi Jenny,

Sounds fun, I've never done anything like that before but I'd like to give it a try.
