Dementia Friends session

Post by GemmaR »

It's not exactly a social event, but I wanted to add a bit more about the dementia awareness session that I will be running at the pub tomorrow night for anyone interested.

Dementia Friends is an Alzheimer's Society initiative about increasing awareness of dementia and creating a more dementia friendly community. I'm a volunteer "Dementia friends Champion" so I've been trained to deliver the awareness sessions.

The session will last about 30 minutes, maybe a bit longer depending on how much discussion there is / how many people are interested. The idea is to learn a bit about what it's like to live with dementia and then think of a personal action that you can take to help - e.g. being more patient with people you come across who might have dementia or visiting someone you know with dementia. You play bingo and get a badge :-)

If anyone is interested but can't come then you can also become a dementia friend by watching an online video. The video doesn't go into as much depth so they also send you a booklet.

Hope to see some people tomorrow!
